  • How can Europe reduce strategic dependencies in critical technologies, supply chains, cloud, AI, connectivity, and telecommunications?
  • What role should telecoms play as the backbone of Europe’s digital ecosystems and critical infrastructure?
  • How can EU policy, public investment, SMEs, entrepreneurs, and large industries better align around common R&D priorities?
  • What capabilities must Europe develop now to make 6G a foundation for sovereign, resilient, and globally competitive digital infrastructure

These questions were at the centre of the “EU Tech Resilience & Sovereignty” session, held on 22 October 2026 during Techritory in Riga, Latvia.

The session brought together representatives from European institutions, telecommunications, industry and the wider digital technology ecosystem to explore how Europe can reinforce its strategic autonomy in critical technologies while remaining competitive in an increasingly complex global environment.

The panel brought together, Colin Willcock, Board Chair of the 6G Industry Association (6G-IA); Miguel González-Sancho, Head of Unit at the European Commission; Normunds Bergs, CEO of SAF Tehnika; Amina Boubendir, Head of Research and Standardisation at Airbus Defence and Space; Arturo Torrealba, Head of Future Connectivity at Telefónica and Project Coordinator of EURO-3C and László Igneczi, Executive Director of OpenForum Europe.

The session addressed how Europe can strengthen its capabilities across key technological domains, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, connectivity, telecommunications and critical supply chains.

A central question was the role of telecommunications as the backbone of Europe’s digital ecosystems. Beyond providing connectivity, telecommunications infrastructure supports the development and operation of digital services, industrial applications and critical systems.

The panel also explored how European policies, public investment, research organisations, SMEs, entrepreneurs and large industrial players can better align around shared research and innovation priorities.

Such coordination is particularly relevant as Europe prepares for the transition towards 6G, which presents opportunities to develop more resilient, interoperable and competitive digital infrastructure.
